ParticipantDepends what is being taught. Are you teaching choreographed patterns and Combinations? Then no defenders is very reasonable and needed to understand movements. The next step, in my opinion, is add a few defenders (ex. 5v3/8v4/10v5/etc). Then equal sided in a 1/3 of field or full sided and full field.
1.) Patterns 2.) Get comfortable by having success 3.) Full go. If you go full go from the start the ‘patterns and combos’ are generally not carried out or remembered and generally continue to get crap soccer if you go equal sides from start.April 17, 2014 at 8:37 pm #2081Phil Weber
ParticipantThe teams that generally do static passing drill followed by static passing drill followed by 4v4 on a postage stamp generally do not translate to the real game.

ParticipantI completely agree with choreographed patterns. This was just two players running into a box with a ball served in. The head coach (who is the Director of Coaching for all of the competitive teams at my club) did this and then expected his players to replicate it when we went straight into a 9v9 game. I want to understand the mindset because to me, I don’t get how this is “world class coaching” from an A Licensed coach. Ever since I introduced my teams to possession based soccer in the fall, it has been night and day. The picked it up a lot of what I was introducing very quickly and applied it. The head coach kept yelling at his players to recognize what they did in practice. To me, this means what you’re doing isn’t working and it is time to change. I’m just being honest.
I listened to a press conference by Roy Hodgson talk about how he wants England to play. To sum it up he said, we will work on all aspects of the game, which really means they have no philosophy of how they will play. This is kind of how my club operates. I just want to know what why keep that philosophy if they players aren’t developing. To me it is obvious, but I know it’s not to everyone. Everyone has their opinion and way about going things.

ParticipantThe only way to figure out what the DOC is doing is to ask him. I think most people on here, if running patterns at goal, would do unopposed (as your DOC did) then lopsided numbers, then equal numbers as I noted in response above. Game-like training is very important, but if running patterns so is unopposed…imho.

ParticipantI appreciate you being honest. I’m doing my best to be. It’s the only way we’ll get better at coaches. I did ask him. He gave me a very vague answer, which is why I’m asking y’all. There was no patterns or anything to it. He literally just rotated strikers and had players kick a ball in. There was no pattern, system, or anything. I do understand the importance of practicing certain things, but in my opinion apart from 4v0 rondo and patterns, everything should be 100% game like training. I want to understand the mind frame of why go from unopposed to completely opposed and expect the same results.
